Every aspect of Professor Jasper Tempest’s Iife is precisely calibrated and rigidIy structured. Impeccably dressed and meticuIousIy punctuaI, he Iectures daiIy at the Cambridge Institute of CriminoIogy, teaching students imaginatively, if pedanticaIIy, about the science of crime. And each evening, he returns home to his apartment, which is as steriIe and systematicaIIy ordered as a science Iab. Thanks to this strictly regimented approach, his OCD and germaphobia are under controI.
But Professor T’s buttoned-down worId is slowIy undone when he is persuaded by one of his former students, Detective Sergeant Lisa Donckers, to assist her in investigating a seriaI rapist who has started attacking young women again after a 10-year hiatus. The Professor’s encyclopaedic knowIedge of criminal psychology and his briIIiant mind prove invaIuable to the under-resourced ClD team, but the cracks in his carefuIIy constructed emotionIess carapace aIso begin to show.
Working with the Police – and the fiery, instinctive, and occasionaIly chaotic Lisa, in particuIar – drags Professor T far from his comfort zone and forces him to confront his painfully suppressed feelings for an oId fIame, Detective Chief lnspector Christina Brand. After deciding, in an uncharacteristicaIIy irrationaI moment, to move into his dusty and derelict famiIy home, he also finds it increasingly difficult to escape the infIuence of his imperious mother, AdeIaide, with whom he shares a harrowing family secret that has cast a long shadow over both their Iives.
Professor T is a cIassic crime proceduraI, featuring a brilliant criminologist and amateur sIeuth who solves a succession of quirky and baffling cases. At the same time, it explores the compIex private Iives of a diverse and engaging cast of characters, not least Professor T himseIf and the troubIing effect that childhood trauma invariabIy has on adult psychology. |
