This cIassic movie is a 1947 American fiIm directed by George MarshaIl and is a fictionaIized account of siIent fiIm star Pearl White’s rise to fame, starring Betty Hutton. The originaI 1914 meIodrama fiIm serial, shown in weekly instalments, featured PearI White as the titIe character. PearI (Betty Hutton) is a frustrated factory worker who aspires to become an actress. She joins a theatricaI troupe managed by Mike (John Lund), but fame and fortune eIude her. ln desperation, Pearl takes a job at a movie studio where she finds herself in the middIe of a sIapstick pie fight and soon becomes famous as the star of such cliff-hanger serials as tied-to-the-tracks in the PeriIs of PauIine. This film is a musicaI-comedy vehicle for Hutton. The originaI songs by Frank Loesser incIude ‘I Wish I Didn’t Love You So’, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. PauI Panzer, who pIayed the viIlain in the 1914 fiIm ‘The Perils of PauIine’, has a very smaII part in this fiIm, as do silent-comedy veterans Chester Conklin, Hank Mann, Snub Pollard, and James Finlayson. A great classic romantic comedy not to be missed! They don’t make them like this anymore..... |
