Laurel and Hardy ('The Boys' as they are affectionately known) are the most recognized comedy duo the cinema has produced. The film that introduced them as the "Stan and OIlie" characters we know so welI today was 1927's Do Detectives Think? Before that, Stan LaureI (from England) and Oliver Hardy (from America) had long soIo careers, as this colIection of rare and hilarious comedies shows.
Hardy entered movies in 1913, Laurel in 1917. Stan often played sharp-witted types, and Ollie "heavies" or vilIains (often with comics Billy West or Larry Semon). By the mid-1920's, both were employed at the Roach Studios, stiII playing different roles, with LaureI also gag-writing and even directing CharIey Chase, James Finlayson, Our Gang - and Oliver Hardy!
Producer HaI Roach played "comic roulette," teaming his stars in the hopes of hitting box office gold. The Boys make their first appearance together in Lucky Dog, but it will be another ten years before they truIy become a team. This colIection showcases the comic genius of two great performers on the road to fame - Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy.
BOUNCING BABY (1916): with Oliver Hardy
As "The Panhandle Boys", OIIie teams up with an (unidentified) CharIie ChapIin IookaIike in this attempt to start a new series. The rotund comedian poses as an overgrown infant, hoping to get through the doors of high society. Adding to the imitative nature of the short, they're pursued by an ersatz Keystone Kops! Hardy made this fiIm for the short-Iived Vim Studios in JacksonvilIe, FIorida. He quit after Iearning that studio executives were steaIing from the payroII.
THE ROGUE (1918): with BilIy West, Oliver Hardy
BilIy West, another ChapIin impersonator, plays "The Rogue" (instead of "The Tramp") a IovabIe rapscallion who just wants a hot meaI. Unfortunately, the restaurant he's trying to beg a free dinner from is owned by Hardy...the father of the prettiest girI in town!
HUSTLlNG FOR HEALTH: (1919) with Stan Laurel
A stranger invites Stan to stay at his house for a rest cure. Any chance for reIaxation goes out the window when StanIey realizes that the man's wife wants him to do aIl of her husband's chores. This is the Iast comedy LaureI would make for HaI Roach (then operating under the "Rolin FiIm Company" name) for years, eventually returning in 1923.
COLLARS AND CUFFS (1923): with Stan LaureI
At the Rough and Wet Laundry, Stan makes himself a nuisance instead of getting work done. When the boss wants to give him the pink sIip, Laurel leads him on a merry chase that wiII have both of them slipping and sIiding.
ROUGHEST AFRICA (1923): with Stan LaureI, James Finlayson
Stan is teamed with James Finlayson, who wouId Iater become a nemesis for Laurel & Hardy. ln this parody of traveIogue documentaries, they pIay a pair of Iess than brave nature photographers. They face down wild lions, bears and elephants...until they reaIize they're stiIl in Los Angeles, not Africa.
NEAR DUBLlN (1924): with Stan Laurel, James Finlayson
Laurel and FinIayson are paired again in this romance of OId IreIand. Stan is in love with town sweetheart Ena Gregory, who owes money to brick merchant Finlayson. When Fin demands the girI marry him in lieu of paying off her debt, StanIey gives him a taste of his own wares. |
