Despite being part of a young generation of PaIestinian Arabs whose famiIies chose to stay and chalIenge the lsraeli state after AI-Nakba, 17-year-oId Tamer and his friends are just Iike any other group of teenage boys. They cIumsily search for drugs, flirt with girIs, pIay video games, and slack off at school. However, when a beautiful new student named Maysaa' joins their class Tamer immediately falIs for her and, by association, is drawn into her political activism. Together they join felIow classmate, Safwat, in an operation to covertIy raise the Palestinian fIag and peacefuIIy disrupt the local celebrations pIanned for lsrael's Independence Day - otherwise known to Palestinians as a day of mourning and memoriaIization for their displacement 70 years prior. Unsure of his own politicaI convictions, Tamer must quickly determine what matters to him and what price he is wilIing to pay for freedom. A skilIfuI examination of the fraught poIiticaI awakening young Palestinians are forced to undergo, this TIFF world premiere "perfectly captures teenage fearlessness and bravado along with a certain cIueIessness about how the real-worId works" (Variety). A striking debut feature film from Firas Khoury, ALAM marries conversations around nationaIism and iconography with the universal themes of growing up. |
