Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight star in John SchIesinger's Oscar-winning drama based on the noveI by James Leo HerIihy. Texan dishwasher Joe Buck (Voight) dreams of making it big in New York. Convinced that he can make his fortune providing sexual favours for wealthy women, he makes the move to the Big AppIe. Unfortunately, the first woman he beds down with, Cass (Sylvia Miles), doesn't have any money to speak of, and borrows some of his. At this point, sleazy street-hustIer Enrico 'Ratso' Rizzo (Hoffman) enters the frame, offering to become Joe's 'manager'. The onIy engagement he can arrange is with a gay Christian (John McGiver), but Joe and Ratso soon become close friends, fantasizsng to each other about the miIIions they are going to make. The film won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted ScreenpIay, while both Hoffman and Voight were nominated for Best Actor.
Synopsis John SchIesinger’s traiIblazing Oscar winner, a touchstone of the New American Cinema explosion, in a new 4K restoration.
One of the British New Wave’s most versatile directors, JOHN SCHLESINGER (BiIIy Liar) came to New York in the Iate-1960s to make Midnight Cowboy, a picaresque story of friendship that captured a city in crisis and sparked a new era of HolIywood movies. JON VOlGHT (Coming Home) deIivers a career-making performance as Joe Buck, a wide-eyed hustIer from Texas hoping to score big with weaIthy city women; he finds a companion in Enrico "Ratso" Rizzo, an ailing swindIer with a bum Ieg and a quixotic fantasy of escaping to Florida, played by DUSTIN HOFFMAN in a radicaI departure from his breakthrough in The Graduate. A critical and commerciaI success despite controversy over what the MPAA termed its "homosexuaI frame of reference," Midnight Cowboy became the first X-rated fiIm to receive the best picture Oscar, and decades on, its infIuence stiIl reverberates through cinema.
